Live television and on-demand streaming now appear side by side on the same screens, which can make them look like variations of the same product. Technically they share many components, but editorially and operationally they solve different problems.
The simplest distinction
Live TV follows a schedule. Everyone watching the same feed sees approximately the same program at the same time. On-demand streaming starts when the viewer chooses. The program is stored and can normally be started, paused or replayed independently.
A modern service can combine both. A broadcaster may provide a continuous live channel alongside a library of recently aired programs.
